My Experience

During my time as a student at UNC, I’ve had lots of opportunities to work in newsrooms across all mediums.

Below is an overview of my work experience and some relevant work samples.

Print Media

My first reporting gig came my freshman year of college for the city & state desk at The Daily Tar Heel. I became a senior writer right at the end of my first semester my freshman year. I then became an assistant city & state editor at The Daily Tar Heel for a year and a half.

I’ve also worked at the Hickory Daily Record and the Winston-Salem Journal where I covered local government, education, breaking news and crime, some business and community interest stories.

The work sample below is a community feature I wrote for the Hickory Daily Record.

"One acre prison plot grows tomatoes, redemption in Newton"

Broadcast

I’ve worked with Carolina Week (UNC’s student news broadcast program) for a year.

I then started producing the morning news show, “Rise and Shine.” And I’m headed back to Carolina Week to be one of the executive producers for the 30-minute flagship news show next semester.

This work sample is a 1.5 minute package about how a small local farm navigated the threat of bird flu... and what they didn’t do to the price of eggs.

"From the homestead: the price of eggs isn't going up"

Audio

I spent a semester working at North Carolina Public Radio - WUNC. I’m familiar writing newscast copy, voicing reporter spots and longer features. Additionally, I wrote SEO friendly digital stories for web.

The attached work sample is a story about a proposed Charlie Kirk mural in Elizabeth City, NC.

"Elizabeth City Mayor says there's no plan for a Charlie Kirk mural"
